Esteemed Sir,

In reading your fine publication this evening I came across a small error that may perhaps be
perceived by some as partiality on your part. Though you and I happen to see eye to eye on the
issue of the new fancy rule, in that we would both select questionnaire item "a", I would note that
the wording of item "e" may be construed as highly exclusionary by many duelists.

It has been my experience that at least as many non-warlords as warlords have been displeased
by the new rule; both commoners and grand masters have voiced their displeasure at coming so
far to be "robbed" of a privilege they fought against but will now never fight with. Though I feel
the rule was a necessary change and a major enhancement of the game as a whole, in the interest
of fancies, I recommend that you alter the wording of questionnaire item "e" in order to receive an
accurate indicator of public sentiment.

As always thank you kindly for your time, and doubly so for producing such a surpassingly
excellent publication.

Yours sincerely,
Fandral Kurgan

Response:
Dear Shadowrun,
Your remark that "at least as many non-warlords as warlords have been displeased by the new
rule." Even though only week one of the poll has gone by, and it will be extended to allow
everyone to vote, so far the only people to have voted "d" or "e" have been warlords. It seems
that the lower ranked people are all saying "a" or "b," but mostly "a". For instance, in one
comment from Walkker, he says that, "Those of us in the lower ranks find it an advantage. It isn't
so devastating to challenge a warlord. We stand a chance of winning, instead of having an uphill
battle."
This is typical of the responses I have been getting from the lower ranked duelers.
However, in concession, I have altered the wording of "e" to as follows: E: "I hate the rule! It
took away all my fancies or potential fancies!"
-Dan

What Service...

Last week if you recall, this editor complained about the standings as being rather a mess. It was
also reported that Gloin had taken over the thankless task. And lo and behold, the last 2 weeks
the standings were posted as scheduled and they were wonderfully free of error. What's more, the
new feature of having the date the warrior last fought is rather handy as well.
So hats off to Gloin. Keep up the good work.

Buy my bag o' gore!
Have you ever been to a match with is completely made of defensive moves or where the
opponents just dance a lot?
Here is your solution!
You can throw it at a friend!
Juggle it!
Or for that special vampire in your life... it is guaranteed pure and safe to ingest.
It's only two gold pieces a bag... (the stuff o' life)

Are you a commoner?
Do you get sick of being put upon by warlords?
Do you see all those "Amaltea for Overlord" buttons and wish you had a button?
Well now for the very first time, you can buy my "I'm a future warlord" button.
That's right. Let them know!
Show them that you are no common commoner!
Just one copper!
For all this neat stuff and more, come see GUYTAR or if he's not around you may see Crodo foe.
I would like to give credit to Dare Ltan for showing me that there is a market out there for my
stuff.

Interview with returning Warlord Fantasy RC

Broadway Dan, out scouting around for news found newly reactivated Fantasy RC and
interviewed him for the magazine.

DOS TODAY: RC, what was your original reason for leaving?
FANTASY RC: At the time of my original leaving, I had achieved most of what I set out to do.
Even though there are many Warlords about with great knowledge and ability in Duel of Swords,
I, alone, held the title "The Warlord". I felt that the competition level dropped in the sport, even
with many Warlords, so I decided it best to retire.

DT: What did you do while you were away from the DoS?
RC: Besides being a Warlord in Duel of Swords, I was also a Paladin in the Arena. At the time
of my leaving, I was a GrandMaster Paladin, and also the Leader of the Paladin Guild. After
leaving DoS, I began to strength the Paladins and the Guild of Paladin with increased knowledge
and skill programs, also increasing our numbers in a great recruiting campaign.
Currently, I am the 3rd Highest Ranking Member of all the Participants in the Arena, and my
Current title there is Champion GuildMaster Paladin.

DT: And why have you chosen to return?
RC: After being away a while, I started missing many of my friends from my past. I came back
to the DoS to talk with them, and what I saw impressed me. Many combatants were very skillful.
I felt that they finally turned around the competition level of the sport. So I decided to give it a
try, while still retired, just for fun. Afterwards, I decided that the competition level was higher
than even I took it to be, so I decided to come back and try my hand and skill at achieving what I
couldn't since my beginnings in DoS. I wish to try and finally achieve the title of Overlord.

DT: What do you think of the rule change about Fancy moves?
RC: For myself, I can agree with the rule. In many of my battles, I don't use Fancies, unless my
opponent chooses that as their preferred method. Once they open the Fancy play, only then
would I utilize my fancies. Also, I never believe in the fact of someone, no matter their level,
winning a match by a move that would normally have not won, but does, only because of the
Fanciness of it.

DT: Did you try DoF, or the upcoming DoM? What are your thoughts on them?
RC: I have not tried DoM, but I have been in DoF. After seeing how the combatants there take
advantage of winning matches off of the new participants by using all of their knowledge and skill
against someone with no knowledge or skill of the spirit, I decide that it was not a sport for true
warriors, with honour. This does not reflect the sport itself, or every participant, it just reflects
the few times I have been there, and the actions I saw, and sometimes felt, as when I first
attempted it and was taken by someone a couple levels above me, using all their skills while
fighting myself. (Oscar has to agree on that one, as when he first tried the game he was gleefully
taken apart without any knowledge of the game either)

DT: Any other comments?
RC: I believe that after the several years that I have been away, that Duel of Swords has gone
through many changes, and will probably go through many more, but all in all, the participants
learn, adapt, and enhance their skill.
I was most impressed upon a comment I heard last night, that truly made my returning worth
while. Someone had said "We are all Friends down here" when someone mentioned that they felt
uncomfortable sparring with a friend. I am glad to see that the hostilities in the sport, and even
between opposing schools, is all taken in good humor.

A Dueler's Tale, part 1

by Ulath ni Fici

The wind splashed heavily upon his dark, desolate face as the scars outlining his cheek
shined in the smooth rays of the moonlight. He leaned back on the saddle, the leather worn with
age, blood, and oil. His silken, black garb was a stark contrast to the white horse he sat upon.
His long, tawny hair framed his face gently, wisps of curly ends splashing across his tanned skin,
waves in a sea of darkness. His jade eyes glanced out from their deep set, taking everything in,
their pinpoints of light smoothly running over everything. His roughly muscular torso turned
about on the animal, to glance behind him at the long, windy dirt road. The hoofmarks behind
him marking his path. He turned back to glance at the strange city before him, wondrous beings
travelling between the dank alleyways of the streets--lights, magical and normal lighting every
corner, every sidestreet, with their white rays.
He glanced around at the signs before him, the letters forming words, fitting into his mind.
He saw one about dueling or some sort. He strode toward that one, his dark green eyes upon it,
fixated. He saw a few people entering, and leaving, their smooth, iron weapons hanging loosely
from scabbards at their waists. One man had a sheath on his back, the long, heavy broadsword
dangling in it.
He wrapped his right hand about the hilt of his axe, and tightly closed it. He nodded to
himself and entered the strange building, filled with a cacophony of sound, fighting for dominance,
iron clashing with iron, chattering complaints, loud jabbering of drunken men, and the smooth,
romantic banter of flirtatious frivolity.
