New Magazine
There is a new magazine in the works, readers, and I encourage you all to take a look at it when
it comes out. It is not an easy thing to produce a magazine on this sport, and I wish the Gramps
and Granny good luck in their endeavor.
Honor
There has also been a trend in the boards and in the basement of holding up honor as the only
thing holding this sport together, and since there is a marked lack of honor in the duels these days,
that the sport is doomed to fail. Now I myself wrote an editorial a few issues back about honor,
and the lack thereof, but this was not what I was speaking of. Being honorable should not depend
on your dueling style or your use of fancies. Entirely too much is being based on this separator of
the dueling classes. A fancy is an earned tool, to be used by the dueler in any way he deems
fitting during a duel. It is not for us to conclude that an individual is lacking honor simply because
that person chose to use all of their fancies. Neither is it fair to conclude that all who decline to
use fancies on commoners should be considered honorable. This is a personal choice. Let us all
stop judging one another by this yardstick and start dueling.
Role-playing
Another hot topic of late has been a lack of role-playing in the duels. From my own
observations, there is a fine amount of role-playing going on behind the scenes. What everyone
seems to forget is that while we duel, we are usually not able to react to things as we normally
would. Case in point: The vile Tahasara dueled Merilsa one evening and after their duel, the fight
continued. They fought for several minutes and then the snake dragged the woman out of the
room. Not once during this whole scene was there a comment of any sort such as, "Stop that" or
"What are you doing?" Another case in point, the same Tahasara has a terrible habit of kicking
his opponents when he is finished with them. After one duel with Luthien, he withdrew his blade
with a boot on her stomach, and then kicked her as he left the ring. Now... for all you people
decrying the lack of role-playing and the lack of honor, why did none of you comment on these
appalling actions? Simply because you are too busy dueling. Also, I can name one RDI who
openly dissuades role-playing (defined in this context as "needless chatter") in the dueling as they
are of the opinion it "slows down the IMs." Duels do take concentration, but there is never a
night when someone is drinking an ale, sitting on the bleachers watching, or flirting with their
sweetheart. The dueling rings are a place of such frivolity, and I think that the role-playing that
goes on here is exactly right for the place. Most of the people in RhyDin come to the basement to
duel for fun. Very few people bring in their "bad guy" characters as well (Tahasara being an
exception). Instead of griping, do something about it if you feel a lack. Role-playing is what
"we" make of it, rather than a job for the RDIs. If you're not happy with it, change it.
But then that's just my opinion...

Honor in the Rings
Valmion and Cullyn Darelir met in the ring recently in a very exciting match that will not soon be
forgotten. With all the pomp and color of previous duels, this match began with the marvelous
calling of Siera Red. Valmion and Cym both thrust for their opening move, tying the score
immediately. Cym went on to take the lead by sidestepping Valmion's thrust, thrusting into
Valmion's low cut, and low cutting the Overlord's slash. Cym did the almost unheard of
Quintuple cut maneuver, coming up with two points for the effort. But in a comeback quite
typical of the Overlord, the next two points were his, followed by one to Cym and then three
more in quick succession to the Overlord.
The moves:
Valmion Cullyn
Thrust Thrust
fancy circular parry circular parry
thrust sidestep
low cut thrust
high cut high cut
slash low cut
fancy duck high cut
fancy circular parry low cut
sidestep high cut
low cut lateral parry
thrust low cut
fancy lateral parry thrust
Another note may be made that Cym did not use any fancies which should be proof enough to all
you commoners out there that it *can* be done. The victory was within Cym's grasp. So do not
fear fancies... plan for them.
Also in the stands to watch the duel were Me Monk who was a great annoyance to yours truly
as he managed to in one evening: pass the table sending my notes to the floor, turn on a fan,
sending my notes to the floor, open a window which would have sent my notes to the floor if not
for the boulder I had placed upon them, set fire to the notes and then put the fire out with a
drenching rain spell (with help from several others, all who managed to get me wet too). To his
credit, he managed to dry me out before the evening was over, and for that I'm grateful. A word
of warning, though, try avoiding this Monk if you have valuable paper on your person.
::scrawled at the bottom of the page, clearly added after the page was supposed to be ready to
send to the printer, is another note::
And watch out for that Siera Red. She 'bout tore my head off trying to get ale. -Cub Reporter

Fable who is standing there gaping, his mouth open::
The Splendiferous Babe Herself Talks about Dueling
I popped into Kairee's Office not long ago and interviewed her about DoS and its beginnings...
DoSTODAY: Now you brought dueling to the inn, is that right?
RDI Kairee: Nope. Dueling was always around. RDI Marv brought the first version of DoS to
The Inn. But he didn't back it. Not really. At first yes... but his interests went in other
directions. He developed the Arena and that took up alot of his time. By the time I took over,
DoS was down to once a week... with hardly any duelists. I hired two more RDIs, held a rules
meeting, revamped the rules... made them better and tighter and backed the game with promotion
and advertisment. Had some hot young duelists too... lots of rivalry. It was very raw and sexy
then.
DT: Sexy?
K: Oh yeah... Duelists have great bodies... nice muscle tone... I can watch them duel for hours...
Duels can be so intense... especially when the duelists are Masters.
DT: How long ago was this?
K: 'Bout two years. A little shy of it
DT: So the old timers... Cym and Falon, Fantasy RC, and Gray Max... they were some of the
starters?
K: Not Cym.... not any of them really... to go way back... there was Gondar... Me Monk,
Halbarad, Jade, Cute little Gloin and Grey Hunter. RC and Falon and Gray Max came later...
Cym was even later than that.
DT: I understand Monk has returned.
K: Yeah... old druids never die... they just go live in a tree for a while
DT: To what do you attribute this return to the fold, so to speak?
K: There's nothing like the Duel, Babe. It's almost as good as Sex. Basically it's low risk. Lots
of competition to keep the Testosterone high and the Adreniline flowing and little chance of
actual death.
DT: Why does anyone retire in the first place then?
K: Boredom. When you reach the top of the game you have to walk away for a while. When
you are that good, it's hard to find a good challenge. That's why Gondar left the Game. That's
why he GAVE Me Monk the Title.
DT: Do you think he'll eventually return as well?
K: ::emerald eyes turn cold upon DOSEditor:: Not likely. Gondar is dead.
DT: Oh... I see. Not a popular fellow?
K: ::angry cold stare turned baleful upon the editor of the popular Sports magazine:: Gondar
was the BEST. Don't listen to the trash Falon spouts. He's jealous. Gondar was the top-ranked
Duelist since DoS came to The Inn....from the Beginning.
DT: Falon seems to think highly of you ma'am. ::trying vainly to pull up out of the faux pas::
K: Of course Falon does. He always has. He's wanted me for the longest time. Do you want to
hear about the Duel between Me Monk and Gondar? Or do you want to prattle about Falon?
DT: Yes ma'am... Monk and Gondar.
K: Well, as I was saying, Gondar was the topped ranked Duelist for the longest time.... Me Monk
Challenged him for that honor. Gondar defeated the Druid in 5 moves. He was declared
Overlord. When Me Monk Challenged Gondar for the Title again, Gondar saw no point in it. He
had reached the pinnacle. He had nothing to prove to anyone, not that he ever had to prove
himself, and so, gave Me Monk the Title. Falon, of course, would dispute this... such
is his jealousy.
Falon never forgave Gondar for not Dueling him. I remember when Falon first started Dueling
and burning up the track. He had his buddy Gloin brag to me that he would knock Gondar from
his lofty perch. He wanted to make sure I noticed him. To pique my interest.
DT: ::smiles slowly:: Falon likes to be noticed I think, ma'am.
K: Yes. And he is cute. And he does duel well... but he's no Gondar. Who is? He's also good in
bed.
DT: ::blinks for a long minute but lets it go:: And so... dueling has obviously changed since then..
K: It's become a Popular sport..the National Pastime.
DT: Well since baseball's demise... I can't argue there.
K: Base what? ::shrug:: Anyway, Everyone loves the Duel... and they like to see how they rank
up against other Duelists
DT: How do you see it changing in the future?
K: There is always room and need for change. Nothing should be allowed to stagnate but
whatever changes we bring to the sport, we will strive to keep it an open simple game. There are
some areas pertaining to the Warlords and Overlord challenges that are being looked at. And we
will be focusing on the lower ranks too to keep the game interesting for them as well.
DT: Would you care to make any other statements?
K: ::blinking blankly at DoS Editor for a second and then continuing with the standard press
release:: I look forward to the continued success of the dueling sports, Duel of Swords, Duel of
Fists and Duel of Magic. I hope everyone continues to enjoy the games. And well... I look
forward to making all the games even more interesting and full of options for play.

New Oldie
On a recent evening at the Inn, I had the good fortune to meet an educated and experienced
fighter, ThGreyBard. In our casual conversation, I discovered that he was present at the birth -
and early stages - of Duel of Swords as we now know it. This fact seemed worthy of an interview
to discuss it and the Bard's current plans. The interview, conducted at DoS Today offices over
wine and sherry, began with a question to the Bard about when he first joined Q-Link.
ThGreyBard : November...
ThGreyBard : 1986?
ThGreyBard : Th' selfsame year it went online, I was there.
HeddaHat : How did you find it?
ThGreyBard : 'Twas but three months after it's inception, and we received a free copy o' th'
software wi' another program we'd bought.
HeddaHat : We?
ThGreyBard : Aye.. I was nae alone in th' first journey int' Q. I 'ad some friends along.
HeddaHat : Ah....Tell me about that.
ThGreyBard : Aye... Grey Knight an' the Grey Lady. ::Smirks:: I was nae known as th' Grey Bard
then.
HeddaHat : What was your name then....or should I ask?
ThGreyBard : I started out on Q-Link as Brexic, an elf I'd been running in a local game.
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles:: Knight and Lady were both pureblood Scots; they were the ones who
taught me to sing and to enjoy Scottish music.
ThGreyBard : (And it's in their memory that I use this name today, and their accent.)
HeddaHat : Now....tell me about duelling
ThGreyBard : ::Nods::
ThGreyBard : Well, the other thing that Knight taught me was bladefighting.
ThGreyBard : He taught me the basics of claymores, and the more dazzling and complex
florentine.
HeddaHat : ::nods::
HeddaHat : Was this in a practice situation?
ThGreyBard : I fight florentine to this day... it's incredibly hard to beat.
HeddaHat : Or did you duel in competition?
ThGreyBard : Yes... but he was very good.
HeddaHat : ::nods::
ThGreyBard : He fought in competitions in the local SCA chapter.
HeddaHat : SCA?
ThGreyBard : At this point, I didn't have the time to compete, nor was I good enough.
ThGreyBard : (Society for Creative Anachronisms. The people who run most of the Renaissance
Faires.)
HeddaHat : Ah yes
HeddaHat : Go on, please
ThGreyBard : Well, as time went on, I fought in several places... real life, and online.
HeddaHat : ::smiles::
ThGreyBard : I started online as a speedfighter... Are you familiar with the style?
HeddaHat : No, dear. I'm sorry. If Oscar were here....::sighs:: But the readers will be, I think.
HeddaHat : So go right ahead.
HeddaHat : ::takes notes::
ThGreyBard : It's fairly simple... ::Smiles:: Care fer a demonstration?
HeddaHat : Yes! ::grins::
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles::
ThGreyBard : ::Whirls, throws blades at Oscar's nameplate::
ThGreyBard : ::Hits::
ThGreyBard : ::Hits;
ThGreyBard : It's all dependent on how fast you could type.
HeddaHat : ::impressed:: So...the objective is to be very fast?
HeddaHat : Ohhhhhh
ThGreyBard : If you were facing an opponent, he would try to type ::Ducks:: or some such
before you got
HeddaHat : Well, then...someone such as I could defeat you if I typed faster?
ThGreyBard : the word ::Hits:: out.
HeddaHat : Hahahaha
ThGreyBard : Yes... it was a very basic way of dueling, and very role-based.
HeddaHat : I like that game!
HeddaHat : I suppose Macros would help.
ThGreyBard : You had to make sure you weren't fighting someone who was a sore loser....
ThGreyBard : Ah.. ::Chuckles::
ThGreyBard : Q-Link had no macros.
ThGreyBard : In fact, they were outlawed by TOS. ;D
HeddaHat : Oh
HeddaHat : No kidding??
ThGreyBard : No kidding.
HeddaHat : ::smiles at the thought::
HeddaHat : So..you started as a speedfighter
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles:: The only people who had macros were the QGuides... and theirs were
limited to things like, "Welcome to the Lobby!"
HeddaHat : ::laughs::
ThGreyBard : Yes.... I started as a speedfighter.
HeddaHat : Then?
HeddaHat : ::taking copious notes::
ThGreyBard : From there, we moved to the system that is used in all non-DoS matches today...
the rolling of the D20.
OnlineHost : ThGreyBard rolled 2 20-sided dice: 5 17
HeddaHat : Was the scoring the same??? That is, 15 and up were hits and a 20 was 2?
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles:: On Q, anything above the lucky number 13 was a hit. Here, it's been
changed to 15 to make it a bit harder.
ThGreyBard : But on Q, a 1 was also the LOSS of a hit.
HeddaHat : ::nods:: Same now
ThGreyBard : Alright...
HeddaHat : If someone gets a one, they hurt themselves
ThGreyBard : Then, DoS took form.
HeddaHat : But I don't think it's scored against them. Anyway...yes, DoS...how did that start?
ThGreyBard : I don't know whether it originated on Q or on AOL... but it took form, and rapidly.
ThGreyBard : Soon, fighters were telling a coordinator their moves, and he plotted them on a
chart against each other.
HeddaHat : ::Nods, writing::
ThGreyBard : Fights were to 5, as they are here.
HeddaHat : Yes
ThGreyBard : But DoS never really picked up on Q, besides a few people like myself. I was
ranked a man-at-arms when the last DoS match was run.
HeddaHat : Wait...
ThGreyBard : (Had a 10-2-2 record.)
HeddaHat : What do you mean, DoS was "never really picked up on Q"
ThGreyBard : ::Sighs:: There were still too many of the old school, who liked speedfighting too
much to give it up.
HeddaHat : Ah...but Q did not "become" AOL?
ThGreyBard : Although it was unfair to the people who didn't work with computers everyday,
they didn't care.
ThGreyBard : ::Chuckles::
ThGreyBard : Alright...
HeddaHat : They ran simultaneously?
ThGreyBard : Here's the true story...
HeddaHat : ::waiting with bated breath::
ThGreyBard : QuantumLink and PC-Link started back in 1986, I believe.
ThGreyBard : They served two separate communities: The Commodore population, on Q, and
the Apple/IBM group on PC-Link.
HeddaHat : ::Nods::
ThGreyBard : Alright..
ThGreyBard : From there, a new company came about...
ThGreyBard : Mixing the two systems together, it created a flagship service, named America
Online.
HeddaHat : ::nods, sorry he has to repeat history::
ThGreyBard : Q-Link, PC-Link, and AOL ran simultaneously on two Saturn computers.
HeddaHat : Oh!
HeddaHat : Could you go from one to the other - online?
HeddaHat : ::curious::
ThGreyBard : The user logs were linked. For instance, even though Q is gone, I can't create Kell
Raven here.
ThGreyBard : But no...
ThGreyBard : Other than the user logs, there was no direct link between the systems.
ThGreyBard : Now, as of November 1st...
ThGreyBard : Q-Link and PC-Link are gone.
HeddaHat : 1986...
ThGreyBard : No.. 1994.
HeddaHat : What?
ThGreyBard : AOL is now running alone, on those two Saturn computers.
HeddaHat : Oh....and not a note to mark their passing
HeddaHat : ::sad::
ThGreyBard : Oh, there was a note...
HeddaHat : There was?
ThGreyBard : And it raised an uproar.. But only on those two systems.
ThGreyBard : AOL made no note.
ThGreyBard : Q-Link threw up a notice that the system was going down.
HeddaHat : ::nods solemnly:: The children care not for the doddering elders
HeddaHat : No offense
ThGreyBard : PC-Link users were informed that they could switch over to AOL for a minimum
fee.
ThGreyBard : I totally agree, Hedda.
HeddaHat : ::smiles::
ThGreyBard : AOL took Q-Link down, scrapping the old horse, even though it was easier to use.
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles:: Anyways... Q and PCL died... so we all transferred over to other
systems.
HeddaHat : Oh...so....you're an old newbie!
ThGreyBard : Most of the Q-users went to Delphi, because the 64 wasn't capable of handling the
complexity of AOL
HeddaHat : or a new oldie?
ThGreyBard : ::Chuckles:: How about both?
HeddaHat : ::nods:: Delphi can be problemmatical however.
ThGreyBard : No... I'd say I'm a new oldie.
ThGreyBard : Yes, Delphi can be problematical...
HeddaHat : Getting back to the dueling... did the coordinators also duel?
ThGreyBard : Not while they were coordinating.
ThGreyBard : There were always three people involved in a DoS match on Q.
ThGreyBard : The two duellists, and a coordinator.
HeddaHat : ::nods:: Same now...the "caller" and the duellists
HeddaHat : "while they were coordinating"...but they could be duellists after they'd
"coordinated" a match?
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles:: Yes...
ThGreyBard : They would hand the coordination over to another person, and duel.
HeddaHat : ::nods:: Some people now question this arrangement. If the coordinators are also
fighting for a rank. Then...can they call honestly?
ThGreyBard : Most do. And the postings helped.
ThGreyBard : I noticed here that not all the fight results were posted.
HeddaHat : Yes...I think some fights are not for rankings
ThGreyBard : On Q, every fight was written down, and posted, move for move.
HeddaHat : Move for move?
ThGreyBard : That way, if there was a dispute, the players could challenge the duel.
ThGreyBard : Yes, move for move.
ThGreyBard : Each turn, every action was noted.
HeddaHat : ::Nods:: Now it is "called" out....that is, Hedda slices with a high cut and Bard
responds with a stophit
HeddaHat : Point to whomever
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles:: Well, that's where Q had a difference.
HeddaHat : Really?
HeddaHat : What's that
ThGreyBard : On Q, we had 10 moves, referenced by number, not by name.
ThGreyBard : We could use our own names.
HeddaHat : Did everyone have the same number for the same move?
ThGreyBard : The number was all that really counted, to the coordinator... but he/she called out
the move
ThGreyBard : the way it was sent... For instance...
ThGreyBard : "Grey Bard throws up a moulinet; Natasha's quick thrust is parried.... Grey Bard
has advantage."
HeddaHat : ::nods::
ThGreyBard : My favorite move... the moulinet. ::Grins::
HeddaHat : I don't think I've ever heard of it.
ThGreyBard : It's the equivalent of the Defensive cross (lateral parry?), overall, in DoS terms.
HeddaHat : Oh.
ThGreyBard : A moulinet is actually a staff-fighting term. It consists of spinning the staff end for
end very rapidly, so as to create a blurred shield of wood.
ThGreyBard : You can do it with swords, if you're fairly good.
HeddaHat : So....you sent to the coordinator something like #10...then wrote the description?
HeddaHat : And the opponent said #3
HeddaHat : How did the coordinator know what those meant?
ThGreyBard : Well, say I wanted to use my moulinet.... Then I'd send "Moulinet (8)" to the
coordinator. On Q, instead of having, "High Cut", "Low Cut", etc... he had a list of numbers, one
to ten. It made for a bit more colourful fights, rather than the same moves over and over again.
HeddaHat : ::Nods:: To the coordinator, #8 meant what?
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles:: It was a row of results, on a chart.
ThGreyBard : On AOL, as I said, the equivalent is the defensive cross. (I THINK that's what you
call it here.) (Again, lateral parry perhaps. -ed.)
HeddaHat : Did everyone have the same chart? Was the chart public?
ThGreyBard : Yes.. the chart was posted.
ThGreyBard : Everyone adhered to the same chart.
HeddaHat : Here...everyone builds the chart based on experience. But, presumably, it's the same
chart. The same matrix
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles:: (I've got to go over the rules for the AOL version of DoS again, to make
sure I understand them completely.)
HeddaHat : I think.....
ThGreyBard : So now, I'll be re-entering the duel scene... ::Smiles:: And I hope I can do as well
as I did on Q.
HeddaHat : You see, for the magazine...I cover the gossip...the people element. My boss,
Oscar, covers the battles and the moves
ThGreyBard : ::Nods:: Alright...
HeddaHat : So...I'm a bit hazy on the details
ThGreyBard : And I'll be covering a few blank spots with bits of verse. ;D
HeddaHat : So...are you new to AOL now? Since November 1st?
ThGreyBard : Since October 20th. ;D
HeddaHat : ::grins, liking poetry::
HeddaHat : How are you enjoying it so far?
ThGreyBard : ::Smiles:: It's nowhere near as easy to use as Q was... but that's to be expected,
what with how much more complicated it is.
HeddHat : I do thank you for your interview.
ThGreyBard : Anytime, ma'am.

Cym2 known to many as Cymranger Cullyn Darelir died in his beloved ring 2 last Sunday
evening. While this reporter was not present, it was said that he died of a broken heart having
come back to the duels that he loved so well only to find them changed. Not being able to cope
with these changes, he died and went on to walk new paths.
Walk easy now, warrior. May you be in peace...
