M'lady (Hedda):

In one of your recent columns in DoS Today, you mentioned in passing the pregnancy of my wife
Aliyanna and questioned her marital status.

Just to clear things up, Aliyanna and I were married months ago in the Red Dragon Inn, in a
ceremony performed by Dr. Calan Evans of Triangle University. We've recently (Feb. 21) become
the parents of a daughter, Ciella Katherine deFallon, born at the now-defunct orbital space station
over RhyDin.

We also have moved into our new house, Red Oaks, located near the Triangle University Stables,
and welcome any guests who'd like to visit and see how our marriage is faring.

.... Since many apparently didn't think it could last, given Ali's previous vocation and my ...
reputation. ::wry smile::

Thank you for your time and assistance in clearing my lady's reputation.

Sincerely,
Rayn deFallon

Oscar,

I'm sure you have seen this, but in case you haven't here it is. It was posted on the DoS Folder. I
would also like to add one last thing: If you don't have time for a duel, don't ask for a duel.
Usually people do that and expect the duel to be called in the 15 minutes time they have. Anyway,
here is the post.

Subj: Let's All
Be Nice
Date: 95-02-26 03:14:05 EST
From: Anonom

First let me make it clear , I am not an RDI. In recent weeks ( I'm sure you have noticed ) the
DoS has been extremely crowded. The Callers are overworked and doing there best to keep up
with the demand. I realize that it is frustrating waiting for duel and sitting around watching others
play. I hope everyone realizes that the more times you ask the RDI what round it is or IM asking
questions when your are not dueling it slows the process down. If you are someone who has
never called a duel you may not know what it entails . Onscreen comments about how slow they
are probably don't make them feel very good either.... Secondly AOL itself is also growing rapidly
there are many new people who wander into DoS. The FFGF is different from most of the other
rooms. Many people don't understand what's going on... They say something about Name/Age
Check or start talking about rolling dice. Often responses to their remarks are quite Harsh ... They
are cast into the pit of ignore... Are Beheaded or some such. Usually they take this badly and turn
into a full blown Room Disruption. Then the RDI must stop and deal with it... Perhaps a kinder
gentler approach would help not only prevent this but get another player into the fold. Instead of
jumping on someone right away Say something like This is a free form role playing room we
don't do that here or if they have their caps on say ( please take your cap lock off since
it is considered Yelling and disturbs the room) An explanation of what the room is instead of an
accusation will go a long way. Finally Helping the RDI answering simple questions when they are
asked will also let them concentrate on calling and therefor speed up your duel. If your character
isn't friendly use IMs to the person or put it in ( ) so people know your not going soft. Most of
all don't get excited or freak out if the person really does want to disrupt the room and every one
say please and thank more than likely he'll get bored and leave. Maybe I am totally wrong but
what could it hurt to be a little friendlier.

If people think I should have said who I am

                                     Oh Well :)

Oh Yeah Please and Thank You :)

~Amaltea thought this important enough to send to us, so it appears in the magazine. If you've
not been keeping up with the DoS Folder, we suggest you give it a look, in and amongst the
morass there is a lot of great writing going on in there. There is a wonderful vignette about ties
by Roustam, and this by an anonymous Duelist, re-printed here with their permission. Ed.~

Strangers to the Red Dragon Inn hear vague rumors. Those who know share silent looks of
acknowledgement.
     >The basement<
     You hear them whisper.
     >They fight down there<
Your cautious eye spots the worn, wooden floorboards leading to a planked door cut beneath
the staircase near the hearth, the doortop following the stairs at a rakish angle. Through the splits
in the wood and the cracks between the planks, muffled sounds issue forth, falling within earshot
as you move closer.
Your hand reaches out for the iron pull.
Two sensations immediately strike you, as a backhanded blow strikes across an unsuspecting
face: the voices, rising up from below to drown out the Inn sounds as you step on the rickety
landing at the top of the wooden stairs beyond the door, and the dank, ancient smell of cold earth.
You can feel the landing move as you shift your weight, stepping down upon the first wooden
stair. An instinctive grasp for the handrail is futile, since the builder neglected to install one. Yet
with balance regained, you continue down, one hesitant footfall at a time. The sound of steel
against steel rises up to greet you, and then another, more insidious sound, a sound that too soon
becomes familiar. A sound to fear perhaps, yet one that does not deter you, the slow, agonized
cry of surprise as blade meets flesh. The light is dim on these patchwork stairs, and as you gaze
down to insure that your footing is secure, you see the stains, ancient and dark. A most familiar
sight, you think; however old they be, the stains are of blood.
The roof above you is lower as you continue your descent, though the light is somewhat
brighter. As you duck below the overhang, you reach the final stair. Stepping from the last, the
dim, half-light of the basement surrounds you, sconces on the earthen walls providing illumination
for this hidden chamber beneath The Red Dragon Inn. As your feet rest securely on the dirt floor,
you stare through the light into the smokey pit.
Myriad breeds and races, calling out to friends swinging sword and stave, battle in roped rings
which seem to disappear in endless perspective to clutter your vision. Unknown names, greetings
and encouragements rush to confuse your ears, yet set your heart to racing. Your eyes dart to
take in the room trying not to stray too long from the contests pursued with such vigor. Crude
planked benches along one wall, tiered slightly, filled with spectators, waving, standing,
screaming. The watchers line the rings, and as you make your way through the crowd, you can
see a bar, littered with bottles, and behind it, one patron looking more formal than the others.
Every few moments, this referee calls out the results of the slashing mayhem contained within the
rings, to the cheers and catcalls of the onlookers. Glasses filled with ale clatter against one
another in eager celebration, or crash against a wall in frustration. As your gaze scans the walls,
ancient relics, souvenirs of past battles, trophies and weapons, some beyond human ken, are
nailed and fastened to the beams which hold the earthen walls at bay.
     >I challenge the warlord,...!<
The name is lost in the din.
     >I accept!!<
Then a cheer rises as a duel is done, and two bloodied combatants stagger to the edge of their
ring. Another challenge is issued and accepted, another duel begins as the next is completed. And
the fighting continues, as beyond the confines of this nearly tomblike enclave of champions, the
sun makes its slow ascent, unnoticed by any save the morning sky.
The raucous sounds of steel against steel, the groans as the thrusts hit, the blood splattering
the earthen floor with a sickening sound, all seem to find their place within your cluttered mind.
Your heart beats faster as you watch another duel end, and your hand begins its ascent, your lips
forming the words of challenge, the lure of the rings unstoppable.

Editorial

Make Room! Make Room! (<-- another obvious contest title. Where did it come from? Who
wrote it? What was the movie they made called? Same old cheap prize as before)

Well here's a non-confrontational problem we can all turn our attentions to. In the past month or
so the basement has been crammed jammed full of people. Not just any people, mind you. Not a
gaggle of lobby surfers looking for disruption, (although they've dropped by on occasion). No!
These people are duelers! Twenty-three people minus a caller or two all clamoring to duel! Not
only that, it can take anywhere up to forty-five minutes just to get into the room on many
occasions. Person's unfortunate enough to get punted in the middle of a duel can barely get back
in... only by sheer kindness on the part of someone waiting to duel leaving to make room in
several instances.
  Yikes!
So this editor is calling to the splendiferous Innkeeper herself to turn some of the tireless energy
she used to shut down the orbital space station to renovating the basement. I know there are a lot
of able-bodied folks and a couple of construction beavers, that could help in expanding the place.
A conference room similar to Red Dragon's Hall would be an excellent alternative, it can hold
something like 46 people, and if it were in the keyword RDI area, it would ease RDI callers of
some of the TOS burden which we all know is a royal pain when we're trying to duel and they're
trying to call.
Seems easy enough for one of such great influence.
But then that's just my opinion...

PLAIN AND FANCIES
                    by Hedda Hat
************************************************************************
I'll make thee glorious by my pen,
And famous by my sword
                              James Graham, 1612-1650
************************************************************************

It's been a long time since my last column...and SO much has happened. Hope all this is not old
hat to you. You know I throw away all *my* old hats.

Let's start with the most startling occurrence of the past few weeks. Siera Red engaged! Who
would expect such a frilly and traditional thing from this untraditional non-lady? And
to....LyloMarvin? A...a....well, what exactly is he? We know he is furry and a mage. And he eats
constantly. But somehow, he has won her heart. In fact, rumor and sworn testimony as well has
it that Siera did the proposing! While calling a duel, even. Talk about multi-tasking! That
woman has astonishing depths. I assure you I would not have believed it if I had not verified it
with several people who were present at the occasion. I did happen to catch the encore
performance however, when the engagement was (temporarily) broken off. My assumption was
that Lylo discovered that Siera and CaptLlewel went for very LONG walks and found this
insulting to his man...to his...err, personhood. But no. Then I thought it was because Siera and
her uptight friend Laucia Fyrn had become inordinately *close*. But no. Did it have to do with
CaptLlewel and Laucia being "good friends"? (I know, I know ... menage a DOS?) But no, not
that either. Picture this scene, dear readers: Siera dueling CaptLlewel who earlier, some say, was
threatening an unarmed country lass, and is now winking and wiggling at Siera and Laucia. Nom
Elven is making green roses appear in Siera's hand during the match. Lylo is IN the ring, trying to
talk to Siera and calling her his *snuggums* and *huggy-wuggy*. Laucia is discussing wizardry
and dismemberment with Lylo and she too is in the ring. Meanwhile we have swords bursting
into flames in the next ring, an RDI impersonator wandering about, male dogs responding to
Siera's growling, calls for CaptLlewel to kiss Siera rather than fight her (which he did but Siera
low cut him and got the point - as did he, heehee), and Glor valiantly attempting to track this
insanity and call the moves accurately while Lylo boos him when Siera doesn't score. Ultimately,
CaptLlewel won in 14 rounds. He then asked to take her home (seemed to think winning entitles
him to more than bragging rights and rank changes). Then Lylo broke off their engagement in
order to announce his love for the aforementioned Laucia. At last word, Lylo was pursuing Siera
again, Laucia apparently not able to retain his affections. As usual, Feadur had *no comment* to
make. I understand that later, Siera visited Lylo in his private room. Stay tuned for further
developments!

Finally the news is out! Aspendale and Elysium9 are expecting a child...in some indeterminate
amount of time (length of pregnancy in Rhydin being such an unpredictable thing).
Congratulations to the lovely lady and her handsome baronial lord.

The charming and beauteous Shespeaks married Lakail on Valentine's Day. At the small wedding,
her closest friends stood witness as Dr. Evans performed the ceremony. Unfortunately, none of
Lakail's friends bothered to show up. Perhaps this is the nature of kindred? Speaking of
Shespeaks, where are the law enforcement officials of Rhydin? The robbery and torture at The
Bootery has never been solved. It's shameful that decent, hardworking people in Rhydin cannot
be safe in their own shops from attacks such as this.

It was some time ago, but the wedding of Wrynnet and RangerBlue was a delightful one.
Carrying a bouquet of wild white roses, blue forget-me-nots, and ivy, the bride wore a chaplet of
wild roses, with veil attached and a cream-colored satin gown. The bodice of her dress was
embroidered with seed pearls in the shape of a star. Wrynnet wore mithril and sapphire jewelry, a
gift from Stormcrest, who officiated in a simple and traditional ceremony. RangerBlue was
distinguished looking and as handsome as ever. And if anyone wants spectacular musical
accompaniment, I suggest you look up ThGreyBard, who performed superbly. All this said, to
bring you up-to-date, rumor has it that all is not well in Ranger and Wrynnet's paradise. In fact at
Siera's and Xeno's duel, Ranger was sighing about that very fact. Hmmmmm....doesn't it seem
that all it takes for a couple to become un-coupled is that they get married? Take Loranth and
Pastorale...now kaput! And why don't we have some great divorce ceremonies, anyway? I think
we could get creative here, dear readers! I would love to cover a good and messy divorce! Send
me an invitation or the notes if you decide to have a formal renunciation scene.

One of the most enjoyable occasions I have been to recently was the WereTurkey's eleventh
birthday party. Did you know Katya's parents are were-turkeys also? This rare breed can be
found in...of course... WereTurkey ( I believe it is just west of Transylvania). Jonalyn sponsored
the event and did an admirable job hosting. Some delightful guests attended, and quite a range of
them, too. From Genian to Wrynnet (wonder if she appreciates all the free press I'm giving her
this issue?) to LeCatlyst to the charming Hotspur. Ranger Blue took first prize in the unofficial
pun contest. A wonderful time - or thyme - was had by all. And let me tell you, Katya's bakery
simply cannot be beat for the quality of its cakes and breads and such...I assure you I have tested
the aforesaid items and remember them fondly. Do drop by and try out her latest concoction.

Anyone else find the beheading of E Core disappointing? I thought the whole story was grand
and dramatic until I realized we have not seen the last of that charming fellow. Death, Where is
Thy Sting when people never die...and never fade away either? The excitement and poignancy of
Jonalyn's sudden declaration of love for E Core gives way to simply curious wonder at what must
be eternal frustration for both of them. Ah well, the ways of Rhydin never cease to amaze me.

Anyone at Siera's and Xeno's duel had to be impressed by the quality of the match. Even I, who
know little of such things - being more intrigued by the strange clothing and side conversations -
could tell this was a *match to remember.* Congrats to both for bringing their superior skills to
all of us. And the calling by RDI Keeper was excellent as well.

Til next time, keep those cards and letters coming. I hope it will not be as long between
columns....and I know you hope for the same!

Special Photo Collage:

Last week Siera Red stepped up to face Xenograg to test his worthiness to face the Overlord.
This duel was fraught with the usual talk of how could former Overlord twice over Xeno not be
worthy? But that was all moot. The Overlord Max was well within his rights to declare any
challenger anything he chose to. And as such, Siera stepped forward to the task. In a 10 round
heart-stopper, Xeno emerged victorious and will this Friday, March 10 (9 pm EST Red Dragon's
Great Hall) step up to face the Overlord.
I would like to personally thank Hedda Hat who supplied the transcripts of the event. The editor
in his usual way forgot the match entirely and had to ashamedly go a-begging for folks who had a
record of the event. Keeper and Red did not keep a record, Xeno did not answer the request at
all (see if he gets good press if he gets to be overlord ::muttergrumble:: Just kidding...). Hats off
to the lovely lady gossip columnist who saved her boss's hide again.

Photos of the rounds:

<<photo of Xeno returning the favor to Red as she dips her blade low in a very fancy circular
parry. Just the faintest line of blood is visible above Red's ear.>>

Round 5: Red's tunic is punctured as Xeno thrusts past her low cut for the point.

Round 6: Both opponents fancy duck and take notes.

Round 7: Red's tunic is punctured again as Xeno thrusts past her high cut for the point.

<<photo of Red charging forward in her only thrust of the day only to have it turned aside by a

The duel was fairly fought. Neither party lost honor or face in it. Both should be congratulated
for their skill in a battle hard fought.

Luthien Tinuviel's Golindal

The following is the latest in an ongoing series of articles featuring various duelers and their
weapons. If you would like to see the story of your blade (broomstick, dagger, submachine gun,
etc) appear here, please get in touch with Simini x via email...

Last week, I was lucky to run into Queen Luthien in the Red Dragon Inn. She was gracious
enough not only to call a practice duel between Kalamere and I, but even granted me an interview
afterward. We sat at a relatively quiet table, our ignore daggers unsheathed and in hand to combat
various immortal vampiric-giant-drow-paladins... you know the type.
Luthien was pulling on the usual bottle of single malt scotch, while I, of course, had some guava
juice. She was relaxed, leaning against the booth with the air of one that has confidence in herself
and her abilities. Despite her reputation as a relentless duelist, I found Luthien to be rather easy to
talk to.
She even allowed me to examine Golindal, a blade I found to be exquisite... mithril and steel,
with a glass-like sheen of blue-silver. The tip is actually clear, and creates prisms when held to a
direct shaft of light. A heavy sword, Golindal is engraved with Elven writing that I cannot read.
Luthien informs me that it is a Sindarin phrase, but declines to translate it for me.

Simini: ::smiling:: Golindal... tell me about it. Where did it come from?

Luthien: Golindal, my treasured blade. As for where it came from, I cannot be quite certain of
that, though there is someone you could ask. I'd never thought to... it is, of course, Elven forged
which is obvious by its design. Though mithril I believe is a medium of the Dwarves in forging,
this particular longsword is quite Elven.

Sim: How did you come to possess it?

Luth: Where did I get it? Rather, it was given. I'd been dueling only a few weekends, already
developing a trademark of sorts, which was "draws her humble unnamed blade". Well, I drew the
humble blade before each and every match, until finally, Valmion presented me with Golindal. I'm
still not sure what prompted him to give it to me, though I think it was in hopes that I would put
some variety in my opening salutes! ::grins:: Since then, Golindal has been anything but a humble
blade. There are but two other blades in the DoS that I believe can compare to its splendor.

Sim: ::interrupting slightly:: What two blades would those be?

Luth: ::smiles:: "Valmion's Sword of Imperators" and N Baron (Tolar)'s "Rauko `Amarth". That
translates into "demon doom" in Sindarin, grey elven tongue. But with Golindal... somehow, I
do not guess that Val knew the secrets of the blade when he passed it on to me... but then perhaps
he did... curious. ::ponders for a moment:: Anyways.....

Sim: ::grins, wondering if Luth will ever ask Valmion about it:: What exactly does "Golindal"
mean?

Luth: Golindal, rather than having a translation, is in fact...a "name". And in its most literal sense.
For Golindal, the blade, is more than a weapon. There is a being associated with it, and the
"being's" name IS Golindal... which is also why the blade itself is called Golindal. During a
campaign at Questrion the Ruvian Elf "Golindal" was released from my sword. Since that time
Golindal created the area in RhyDin that some know as Mythandria. But for now, last I heard the
Ruvian was residing at Questrion. My blade Golindal, and the Elf, have not been reunited in quite
some time.
The separation doesn't seem to affect my dueling, though I'd love to try and blame my failure at
the Baron's tournament on that!! ::laughs::

Sim: ::chuckling:: Alright, then, let's speak of some of the more successful battles you two have
been through...

Luth: ::smiles an easygoing smile:: To do so would be to recap my entire existence here in
RhyDin. My life here has been moving from battle to battle, whether political, social or outright
demonslaying war. Golindal has been with me through everything.

Sim: ::nods:: I myself have only carried a sword for a few months, but I think I understand what
you mean... it kind of becomes a part of you, doesn't it?

Luth: When you hold on to something for so long it DOES become a part of you... I guess that
would mean Golindal is part of my identity. But I wouldn't limit it to that. Actually, there are a
handful of people in RhyDin that actually understand all that Golindal is, but again, it would take a
novel's reading of my life to cover it. ::takes a swig of the scotch, her face becoming rather
serious:: I believe that, upon my demise... the blade should go to the hands of someone devoted
to defending RhyDin. So far, besides dueling, this is where Golindal has served most effectively.
Such a blade was not meant to hang on the wall of the DoS to collect dust. The best plan might be
to return it to Valmion. He wields the Sword of Imperators of course, but he found the right
person to entrust it to once, he could do so again.

At the conclusion of the interview, I bade farewell to the Queen of Clatterbridge, feeling
honored to have been allowed this up-close glimpse of her famous blade.

Sim: ::grinning widely:: <w> Goddess, I love this job...

Here's the latest on happenings over in DoF...

Welcome to this week's new-comers: Lord Hrvst, TonyR6550, MadHawk, Frostmoon,
Isamine, Percival, SFC Miller and Assassin X. Hope that you all had fun, and will come visit us
again for some good clean skull-bashing!

Had a number of matches this weekend, with some impressive performances from both
new-comers and some old-timers. There are several new-comers that will bear watching in the
future, including Isamine who had a flawless duel with Percival, and the "morally challenged"
Lord Hrvst who took 4 wins this weekend.

As tough as some of those new-comer duels were, Jake's "Brute of the Week" award goes to
Dallara, who not only had a flawless match, scoring 5-0 in 6 against MadHawk, but also went on
to remind PrinceFyre that Emeralds are by no means invincible.

   LordHrvst over TonyR6550 5-3 in 12
MadHawk over Raelean 5-4 in 15
StriderRgr over Frostmoon 5-2 in 9
Lord Hrvst over Raelean 5-4 in 12
Dallara over MadHawk 5-0 in 6
Tora Zarr over RDI Panthr 5-2 in 7
Lord Hrvst over MadHawk 5-1 in 11
Dallara over PrinceFyre 5-4 in 8
Isamine over Percival 5-0 in 9
Lord Hrvst over Percival 5-2 in 7
Dallara over SFC Miller 3-2 in 5 by forfeit
   Isamine over Assassin X 6-5 in 12

Although it seems PrinceFyre is anxious to separate Dark Axe from his Diamond, they both
might want to keep an eye out for Dallara who seems to have developed a fondness for beating up
on Emeralds and Diamonds. Are you out there Siera? You might be next on her list of Emeralds
to challenge.

Finally, Jake would like to thank everyone for their patience during his training as an RDI. Jake
also wishes to thank StriderRgr and the Lord Hrvst for the nifty crayons.

-----Ask Dr. Stupid!-----
DoS Today's Advice Column!

Dear Dr. Stupid,
How many licks DOES it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop?
-perplexed

Dear Perplexed,
I conducted a scientific experiment to find this out, in which I ate 100 tootsie pops. I'm not really
sure how many licks it takes, because after about the 20th one, I started seeing things. I did get
into a good debate with a grape flavored one, though...
-Dr. Stupid

Dear Dr. Stupid,
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
-Charles

Dear Chuck,
A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck, if a woodchuck could
chuck wood...
Or maybe even more than that.
-Dr. Stupid

Dear Dr. Stupid,
Why do the refs in the Duel of Swords call a fancy duck a penguin?
-Ducking in Detroit

Dear Ducking,
Have you ever seen a penguin? They've got really nice tuxedos, and wear bow-ties and black
loafers, and carry canes. If that's not fancy, then my name isn't... um... er... ::looks at business
card::
Oh! Yeah! My name isn't Dewey, Cheatum, & Howe Attorneys at Law! ::looks at business card::
Hey, this isn't my card... Oh well. I never passed a bar either.

CHALLENGES!
Falire retained his rank against Shadowrun in what SR describes as a "splendid duel".
Falire went on to retains against Feadur, and then challenged and won by default again Fetherstaf.

Qn Luthien defeated Halbarad I by default, then defeated DirkRndom by default, and is now
awaiting an answer to her challenge to the Doctor.

Falon (or perhaps his lawyers?) defeated Phylos by default, then defeated Splugorth by default,
and is awaiting an answer to his challenge to Lady Finch which I think we all expect him to win by
default again.

CatShakira defeated Phylos by default and is awaiting her challenge to Splugorth in another
expected default.

GrayMax defeated Halbarad I by default and is awaiting an answer to his challenge of DirkRndom
in yet another expected default.

Roustam defeated AngQuentor by default
Fantasy RC defeated SlothShamn by default

Grimjk has challenged AngQuentor and is awaiting a reply

WOW... what a lot of defaults... It has been suggested that some of the deadwood be
automatically put into retirement in order to make the challenges more <ahem> challenging.
Might not be a bad idea.
