EDITORIAL
by Johanna Gutenbergh

It seems that the new year is "zinging" in a lot of changes... a
new Overlord and a new baron in the Duel of Swords... a Diamond
Tourney in DoF... and another staff change at Dueling Today. It
is with sadness for her absence and with gratitude for work well
done that we accept the retirement of Simini X as our reporter
for Duel of Swords. Simini's Swords has long been a popular
feature of this magazine and her reporting on the lives behind
the blades of the duelists will be sorely missed. Sim, I wish you
well in whatever your life leads you!

I must admit I never knew that this work could be so hazardous.
While stopping by Red Star Station in hopes of finding a baron or
two to interview before their tournament, I managed to get caught
in a cross-fire of sorts. Some fool, whose name still eludes me,
apparently brought some sort of nuclear explosive into the
Station in a mis-guided attempt to force Ian MacKenzie to talk to
him. Rather than let any of the bystanders leave, this
extortionist shot out the transporter console. Thanks to the
quick help of Trianglmn, a ricochet wound to my upper arm is
healing nicely. I do hope the authorities look into this wounding
and gratuitous violence. I do intend to press charges.

A quick note to our advertisers: It looks like some of your
advertisements are a bit out of date. We welcome revised ads at
any time as well as new material.

If anyone would be interested in working for Dueling Today as a
correspondent for Duel of Swords please let me know as soon as
possible.

REPORT ON THE DUEL OF MAGIC
by Arrendek

"The shortest distance between two points is a straight line."

     ~Unknown

Hello there, folks! In the spirit of the holidays, I have
written a poem
for everyone out there. But first, some interesting duelers of
the Duel of
Magic. In other words, people of honorable mention. They are:
PolyDeuces,
Raist70838, and Marzan drd. Some newcomers to the Duel of Magic
are: Amaltea,
DazedMage, DeityMorph, FireSerpnt, Garet Jaxx, Iron Mord,
Josh1984, Kaeleahe,
Lrd Daemos, MMOZENA, Nicteris, Raistlan 2, RLupton, Shermana69,
Tukros, and
ZephyrMage. Now the poem:

 The mage bolts go flyin',
 through the air so fast,
 when they meet their target,
 there is a blast,
 As I watch the hair,
 being singed to ashes,
 it makes me glad,
 those aren't my lashes,
 And as those Blades,
 go through that shield,
 and the blood flies,
 across the field,
 Don't be at all sad,
 and don't be blue,
 think of that person,
 be happy it's not you!

It's fun! It's exciting! It'll make your hair singe and your
brain tingle!
Yes, folks! This is the time to learn the arts of magic! It's
easy to start,
with only 6 moves to choose from, but, with experience, the moves
expand
quickly! If you think it's fun to be struck with a ton of rock
while giving
your opponent a headache, or watch your blades of magical energy
go through
someone's magical shield, then the Duel of Magic is for YOU!
Conviently located within teleport range on twilight island.

Tired of climbing up your chimney and emerging covered in soot?

Tired of going for a romantic slide down your chimney with
your sweetheart and tasting sooty
lips at the bottom? (Or maybe on the way down if you're an
expert.)

Then give me a call at 1-800-CHIMNEY. Our operators are
standing by (mainly me, and I'm
not fully operational), waiting to hear your pleas for help and
come rushing to the rescue. And
we're cheap! In fact, we usually forget to collect payment...

So be the first in your neighborhood to have a clean chimney.
That neighbor may always beat
you in the yearly Xmas lawn decorations contest, but you'll be
damned if his chimney's cleaner!
Remember, 1-800-CHIMNEY. Call now. Or later, just call!

(Paid for by a grubby old man that just wanted to be left alone.)

(In case there's any confusion... the preceding was from
everyone's favorite chimney sweep,
Falire)

PLAIN AND FANCIES

Darling readers, it is the time for a look into the future. But,
since "The past is prologue to the future," as The Bard said, we
will turn our eyes first to the year just ended. And what a year
it's been. Join me in a stroll down Memory Lane.......

Some of my favorite Rhydin and environs scenes and situations in
the past year:

   *Lylomarvin and Siera Red's engagement
   *Feadur's death duel with CaptLlewel
*Big Bertha and Falire's dog Sex one late night in DoS
*The emergence of Red Star Station as a premiere location for
drama
   *The death of Utah Jimmy
*ArchMage MikeXXVII's battling of all comers in DoM
*The duel between Ambrosius (DOSMentor) and Utmonodris for
high, high stakes
*The serial killer ErikDeSnto's reign of terror
   *Alisa's attack on ChuckPlant
*The dramatic, melodramatic, and sometimes painful breakup of
Aliyanna and Rayn DF
*The demise and final departures of Ecore
   *Were-Turkey's party
*The unveiling of Duel of Magic and warm welcome to all
neophytes
*Shespeaks and Lakail's relationship and continuing devotion
   *Siera Red's duel with Xenograg
*The revelation of Duke Anton's affair with Poison and their
resultant illegitimate child
   *The murder of KMadison
   *Gavilean's continuing romantic escapades
   *Artsblood's battle with "herself"
   *Amaltea and Xenograg's anniversary party
   *ShanniClntn's mastery in DoF

Fond farewells to a few people who left Rhydin and will be
missed...Mad Mad Max, Rissa V, Jayne LaMer, Jaxon T'nas Merlin.
I'm sure there are others.

And a brief look into the crystal ball of the Psychic Friend
Network:

*Moraxian, having finally found the perfect mate, will marry
himself
*Amal continues her prodigious output and will give birth yet
again
*Marx will turn away from his addiction to cream sodas and
discover the joys of beechwood aging
*Elysium and Aspendale will continue their on-again, off-again
relationship
*Kairee will step down and be replaced by Speedina
*The turnover in RDIs will drop below 35% annually
*The new editor of Dueling Today will make her mark in the
dueling rings as well as on the editorial page

Until next edition, dearies.....ta ta!

REPORT FROM THE DUEL OF SWORDS
by Johanna Gutenbergh

Before the barons' tournament I managed to get a few of the
competitors to offer a few words by way of an interview...

DT: What's the best thing about being a baron?

Ian MacKenzie: People aren't chasing me for peer wins all the
time.

Feadur: There is no "best" thing about being a Baron save that it
gives one some
leverage when dealing with the Overlord.

Athlstan: I think the best thing about being a Baron is getting
to duel those excellent fighters who usually won't duel commoners
and lower ranks.

Pervical: I don't see that rank means much except that the
duelist has won a few more
bouts, or a few special bouts. All that matters is how one
performs in the
ring at the time of the duel, any duel.

DT: Who's your pick in the tourney?

Ian: Well... me, of course. But I only say that because lately
I've been dueling
well, and there's only a couple of the others who really give me
fits.

Feadur: The Barons' Tournament will most likely be won by Baron
Ian R MacK. Although
I would not be surprised at strong showings from MorganCrow and
Athlstan. I
hope to make it difficult for the winner myself.

Athlstan: It's hard to say... surely Percival's record indicates
formidable talent... Daegarth is also fighitng quite well...

Percival: That's a tough one. I don't think I'd feel
comfortable picking anyone other
than myself, because I don't expect to lose any matches. Sure, I
might lose
some, but I'm not going to go in there with that mentality.. :D

DT: Who's your toughest opponent among the barons?

Ian: Tough question. I've never beaten Ramirez; but he's never
really spanked me,
either. On the other hand, Adeena's never beaten me, but she's
also forced
me over 5 points each time we've dueled... and she's really
determined.
Feadur, of course, is always a challenge; I won the only duel
between us, so
I'm really uncertain about how we actually match up. Certainly,
none of us
are cupcakes.

Feadur: I am my own worst nemesis. Without confidence, my dueling
can become
hesitant. Hesitation is death in the ring of DoS.

Athlstan: Juan Ramirez is the only one I've fought and never
beaten. Addena is a mystery to me since I've never dueled her and
only seen her fight once.

Percival: Well, I can't think of any Baron I would consider
"easy", but Ian has been
dueling well lately... Athlstan is always tough, as is
Daegarth, not to
mention Zealot. JSV is an unknown for me, could go either way.
In the
end, though, I'd have to say Feadur is the toughest one for me,
though, since
he was the won who took my Overlord title.

DT: Who's your pick for the Warlord tourney?

Ian: That would all depend on who enters... but if Laash enters,
I'd have to lean
toward her. I've only beaten her once in several duels, and her
mentor is
the only dueler other than Redwin that I simply cannot solve, at
all.

Feadur: Of the Warlords, it will boil down to who is available to
participate. There
are too many masters of the game there to predict any result.

Athlstan: I'd pick the one student of my school that holds the
rank, but I think he may not be available for the event. I'd love
to see my second, Procyonn, take the tournament.

Percival: I'd like to see Dazing win it, then beat whoever wins
the Baron's Tourney.
He deserves the Overlord, rather than this rigamarole, but, trust
a gnome to
sow confusion..

DT: Any special training you're doing?

Ian: Just trying to relax, not worry about it, and get myself
back into shape
after my injuries. I seem to be doing alright. ;)

Athlstan: Other than reviewing a few records of duels, I'm simply
trying to stay tuned up.

Percival: Nothing particularly special. The most important thing
is to try and clear
my own mind through meditation, so as to better hear my
opponent's thoughts
as reflected in my instincts.

DT: What do you think about the round robin as opposed to single
elim?

Ian: Personally, I like it. It takes the pressure of individual
duels off, and rewards the person who can duel most consistently
over a very treacherous road.

Athlstan: For myself, I am in favor, as there is room to drop a
match and still win the thing. It could be interesting if we all
end up 4-4....

Percival: I prefer this format, though it does have its
disadvantages. In the future I
would suggest a double-elimination tournament as a happy medium.

INTERVIEW WITH OVERLORD MORGAN CROW:

DT: Did you really expect to win the barons' tourney?
Morgan Crow: I hoped I would do well, that's about all I can say
without sounding
egotistical. ;D

DT: Who was your most difficult opponent?
Morgan Crow: My most difficult opponent was my old freind/rival
Percival. He's over 100
WoL now, and a very accomplished and respected dueler as well.
Defeating him
twice was probably the two most satisfying wins I've ever had.

DT: Do you expect a challenge from any of the renegade barons?
Morgan Crow: I'm not exactly sure about that. I can't think about
that right now
either, I have to focus on the winner of the upcoming Warlord
tourney. But
to be truthful, I really have no idea.

DT: What are your thoughts on the use of the Test of Worthiness?
Morgan Crow: That is a difficult question also. There are many
people who are for or
against the Test, and as an Overlord, you can't please everyone.
I'd imagine
that the first couple of challenges (that is, if I hold my title
after the
Warlord's tourney. :) ) I'll handle personally.

DT: Do you plan to intercede on behalf of loyal barons?
Morgan Crow: That would depend on whether they would want me to
or not. As of now, the
Loyal barons are Athlstan, Ian R MacK, and Percival, and I'd
imagine that
each one of them would be rather peeved at me if I took away
their duel. :)

DT: Who do you most want and least want to see win the Warlords'
Tournament?
Morgan Crow: I can't say who I'd like least to win, because
there is noone who I have
enough against to say "I don't want you to win". Right now, I
just want to
watch and enjoy a good tourney.

DT: Do you have a "lady of honor"?
Morgan Crow: My Lady of Honor is of course, my fiancee Jennavyve
Sieve, who has been
more supportive and loving to me than I ever could have dreamed
or hoped for
in a woman.

DT: Any other thoughts on reaching the highest seat?
Morgan Crow: I'm not royalty. I don't have a long list of valiant
battles that I have
fought. I grew up in the backalleys and streets of RhyDin City. I
was a
thief, an assassin, your basic street trash. But I had a dream,
that one day
I would be the greatest swordsman who ever lived. I am very proud
of this
rank, because I worked hard and believed that I could do it. I
had something
to prove to myself, and I did. I am going to enjoy this for as
long as I hold
the rank of Overlord.

BOOTS

Hey! Tired of all those low cuts tearing your boots to ribbons?

in what appears to be long grey
fur... Up the slippers, for that's what they are, are two long
ears, touched with tufts of fur at the
ends... Beyond those, are two large eyeballs, that are staring up
at the camera... A large mouth
on
each slipper, full of sharp teeth, sticks its pinkish tongue out,
as the Orc-slippers seem to sneer in
mild disgust>>

REPORT FROM THE OUTBACK
by JakeThrash

This past month, besides closing out the old year, also held
the Outback's
first official DoF "Restricted Moves" Tournament. The Restriced
Moves
tournament is a variant from the normal rules for the Duel of
Fists, and was
an idea originated and developed by RDI Percy. The Restricted
Moves rules
differ from the normal rules in that the moves Jab and LegSweep
have been
removed from the matrix and are not available to the duellers.
It also
differs in that rank has no bearing on the tournament as there
are no
Fancies, and every dueller gets four Feints to use throughout
each of their
matches.
The intent of the Restricted Moves tournament was to give
individuals a
chance to try out some of the more esoteric moves contained
within the Duel
of Fists and to work on variant strategies in perfecting their
overall
duelling technique. Also, the inclusion of the Feints is to give
duellers a
chance to experiment with this special manuever which frequently
confounds
duellers in their effective use.
The tournament was held on the 22nd of December and had 8
participants who
fought in a single elimination style event to produce a winner
that was
awarded with 5 free wins and the first ever awarded "With only my
Left Hand"
trophy.
The participants were: AragornKoG, Goldglo, Lrd Daemos,
MorganCrow,
AndersStof, Bador, Lord Rannos and JakeThrash. In the intial
round, in
matches determined by random lottery, AragornKog faced Goldglo,
MorganCrow
faced Lrd Deamos, AndersStof faced Bador, and JakeThrash faced
LordRannos.
Goldglo defeated AragornKoG, 5-1 in 13 rounds. AndersStof
defeated Bador,
5-0 in 11 rounds. MorganCrow defeated Lrd Daemos, 5-4 in 11
rounds.
JakeThrash defeated LordRannos, 5-3 in 14 rounds.
AndersStof, Goldglo, MorganCrow and JakeThrash all advanced to
the second
round. Again by random lottery, Goldglo faced JakeThrash, and
AndersStof
faced MorganCrow. In the second elimination round, Goldglo
defeated
JakeThrash, 5-1 in 15 rounds and AndersStof defeated MorganCrow,
5-3 in 9
rounds.
The results of the second round advanced duellers AndersStof
and Goldglo
to the final round to determine the overall winner of the event.
In the end,
Goldglo defeated AndersStof, 5-1 in 11 rounds.
Goldglo was presented with 5 wins and the trophy by RDI Percy
who called
the event.

Coming up just around the corner is Diamond Quest IV.
Scheduled to take
place on the 13th of January, the event will determine the
Outback's 4th ever
Diamond Ranked dueller. As in previous events and unlike the
Duel of Swords
or the Duel of Magic, the holder of the Diamond does not have an
advantage in
retaining the rank, as all eligible Emeralds including the
Diamond are
required to duke it out in a tournament style event to determine
who will be
the next holder of the Diamond. Plans are being made to hold a
round-robin
event and eligible participants include: JakeThrash, Ian R MacK,
Pecival,
Siera Red, ShanniCltn, SajaLyones, Dallara, DareiyI L,
AragornKoG,
PrinceFyre, Lord Hrvst and MorganCrow.
The event is expected to start at midnight eastern time on the
13th and
all are invited to the Red Dragon's Great Hall to watch the
event.

Additional tournaments, including another Restricted Moves
tourney, as
well as a Glass ranked tourney are planned in the near future.

Finally, the next DoF cycle has begun, and all losses have
been cleared
from the standings. If you despaired of ever advancing because
you had a few
losses hanging over your head, they are no longer there. The
Outback looks
forward to seeing all it's duellers return with the start of the
new year!
See you there! :)
