PLAIN AND FANCIES
by Hedda Hat
*****************************************************
Love and scandal are the best sweeteners of tea.
Henry Fielding
1707-1754
*****************************************************
Well, darling duelists and devotees....another month rolls by and Rhydin continues to surprise,
amaze, and dismay me. Top of the list is the sadness touching that charming Lady Lyric.
Rumor has it that Thargonn is just that....gone, gone, gone. Some say he couldn't handle
fatherhood. However, the more likely truth seems to be that his ship went down in a storm and
he was drowned. Those in the know say that the lovely Lady Lyric is distraught. But I believe
the male population of Rhydin will exert its best efforts to charm her from despair. May the best
man win, fellows!
Stopped by Duel of Fists the other night...There were some scandalously scantily clad young
men running about. One Lithindrym, a manic by behavior and minimalist by choice of clothing,
pranced about the room at length. That Outback....you never know what you'll find there.
Rumors continue to swirl around the marriage of Amaltea and Xenograg. Are there cracks
appearing in that carefully smooth surface? Another marriage that faded....but now seems to be
reviving is that of Merentha and Duke Leto. The gentleman in question assures me that his heart
belongs to Merentha now as always. Anyone care to offer a differing opinion? Just stop by the
Dueling Today offices and I'd be happy to chat. And I understand the Lord of Questrion is
engaged....and I'm confused. Wasn't he married? Did I miss yet another dissolved "marriage-
for-life"? Dear, dear...things change so very quickly here. More wedded bliss ended before
death did them part was that of Lady Larana and JuggerMRoy. The lady gave up custody of the
infant child to the gentleman - hmmm - that suggests a story, doesn't it?
By the way....who is this new and veddy, veddy competent lady NataliyaDy hanging around and
molesting the serving lads in the arena of Duel of Swords? Mark my words, dear readers - she is
one to watch.
Darling Jennavyve recently married my old friend Morgan Crow...the Overlord. I understand it
was a lovely wedding...one that I would report on in detail - if only I'd been there.
Another new face to me is that cute SirTrystan. Saw him in the ring recently...on an off-
night...as he good-naturedly accepted a bad beating at the hands of that not-so-chaste Athlstan. A
tryst with Trystan might be interesting, ladies.
I neglected to mention in my last column that the irritating and uncouth character, TDiesen, had
appeared and continued his normal insulting behavior. He took particular delight in baiting little
Gimli by his scathing attacks on the dwarf's people. Old T -unPC- Diesen really ought to take
some charm lessons from the many delightful males around Rhydin. He might then actually find
some female willing to stay with him for more than a night.
Congratulations to the delightful Shespeaks who gave birth to an as yet unnamed son by her
rarely-to-be-seen husband, Lakail. Much good fortune to you and yours, Shasta, dear. And I
hope your hubby hasn't abandoned you and the child.
A rumor barely to be believed is that the Lady Carrie has chosen to throw her romantic lot in
with the Mad Major SSark. Makes you wonder if it isn't a rebound of, shall we say, major
proportions - doesn't it? Although, SSark can be an intriguing character.
I have a question for everyone...why is it that the odd duck, VikKrueger, is never sober?
Running from himself perhaps? And always -- drunk or not -- uncouth. And who is that
mysterious woman Jastilin D? So many new faces and stories in Rhydin...I look forward to
ferreting ...err...learning about them.
There's an auction coming up at Red Star.....be there or beware. All proceeds benefit the Rhydin
Orphan's Fund, so open your pockets and pocketbooks to show you care.
Some time ago, that hostile Kethlyn was dumped by Alukarrde. She seems unable to cope with
the rejection and has targeted any men and all men since. One JJ Mingo recently escaped her
clutches one evening at Red Star, just barely. He's luckier than he knows, I suspect....Robb
Jaxon came to his assistance in evading Kethlyn. But not all will be so fortunate. Let the
handsome men of Rhydin take warning....the toothsome lady is on the prowl.
The Duel of Swords seems sadly bereft of former stalwarts these days. Where is our old friend
Feadur? Did Siera's death undo him? And the Bishop? Where has he gone? Luthien is
missing...former author Simini has filed a lawsuit against Alkron....this is no longer the sport of
royalty, but the growling and howling of disrespectful jackals. I call upon Overlord Crow to act
to stem this tide of mediocrity.
Diamond Jim Percival stopped by DoF the other night to greet his peasantry. I must say, the
atmosphere in the Outback is quite friendly. Stop by sometime when you're feeling lonely and,
perhaps, a bit angry. Some fisticuffs will restore you to equilibrium.
One recent night in Red Star Station, I attempted to use the Ladies Room....only to find it
occupied by Moraxian. Hmmmm....makes you wonder, doesn't it? He made the dearly departed
and then returned Kalaya Madison cry earlier in the evening...perhaps she wouldn't lend him her
dress?

REPORT FROM THE DUEL OF SWORDS
by Johanna Gutenbergh
Well, well... ask for calm and I get it. MorganCrow continues his largely uneventful and almost
unchallenged reign over the Duel of Swords - no doubt his new status as husband to the lovely
lady Jennavyve is event enough for now.
It looks like the barons are settling down... since Red zealot successfully defended her ring
against Tukros. The only challenge pending is that of WickedDeth, once a baron, against Ian R
MacK.
Hadar Dule continues his rise through the rankings, having collected 46 wins over losses since
the begginning of the year. If anybody can catch those three over 100 WoL duelers it looks like
Hadar can.
Who is this Tarl Cab0t? He came out of nowhere to appear as a Master at Arms the beginning of
last month and now he's made Warlord. He's got to be better than he looked the night I saw him
duel...
RJ Wnston and The DueIist were two I told you to keep an eye on... and bioth have become
Warlords since the last issue of Dueling Today. Nice work!
I am delighted, and relieved, to have a guest column for you about dueling strategy.
"Blinking"
by Procyonn
I enjoyed Shannon Colton's Duel of Fists analysis very much. I do not have
many duel records in the notes I brought home with me, but I believe the
following duel nicely illustrates my notes on "blinking," which I left behind
for the New Caithness City library.
Procyonn A.N. Other
HC TH 0-1
No first-round disengage? I knew this opponent to favor a first-round
sidestep, however. Unfortunate!
LC CP 0-1.5
I was determined to test the "blinking" theory in this match, and low cut
knowing that I would lose half a point in such fashion. Now I ask: will he
parry laterally, duck, or thrust in round three?
HC SS 1-1.5
A "blink." My opponent simply didn't believe that I would continue to string
cuts. Now I felt pressured to change tactics, for I felt so strongly that he
would circle parry next that I considered slashing.
SS SH
I was wrong! Clearly this opponent is thrust-minded. That reminds me --
Hubert is to forward another of my unfinished essays on how duelists tend to
fall into one of two categories -- "horizontal duelists," who favor cuts and
parries, and "vertical duelists," who plan their maneuvers around the thrust,
stop hit, and sidestep. (Though the sidestep is, by definition, a lateral
move, it falls into the "vertical" group as far as my idea goes.)
SH TH 2-1.5
He had shown himself to be a "vertical" duelist, and one must keep them
honest!
LC LP 3-1.5
Don't swordsplayers often feel that the crux of their existence is predicting
which cut will follow their missed thrust? Unlucky!
HC TH 3-2.5
Again I found myself pondering the "blinking" jottings. Rounds 7 and 8 are
the same as rounds 1 and 2, but who shall vary from the round 3 pattern in
round 9?
LC CP 3-3
Now then, here we are in the same position as in round 3, except the score
does not favor my opponent. How often does one find that two rounds in a duel
mirror two earlier rounds? Are you mad if you repeat the third move in that
chain, or cunning?
SS SS
So, to high cut as in round three would have been a success! I counted on a
thrust or a flat parry, though. After round nine, we are in the very common
state (another set of disjointed notes exists about this situation, too) of
perfect equilibrium. The score is tied, and the duelists have made the same
move in the prior round, so no positional advantage is to be had. This is a
more difficult case than round one, though, for the score is nearer to five,
so wins and losses hang more delicately in the balance, and some of your
style has been revealed. In this instance, I predicted a stop hit from this
"vertically"-inclined contestant, so a cut was in order.
HC CP 4-3
A surprise parry! This is an example where the theory of "economy in DS"
paid. Since a stop hit was anticipated, a scoring high cut would leave the
stronger low cut in reserve.
CP LC 4.5-3
Naturally the trailing combatant must hope to lock blades low, if not score.
A near-classic example of timing one's parry.
HC FCP 5.5-3
I credit this point (and match) to something Bishop Fandral Kurgan told me:
"it's better to lock blades than to be flummoxed by a parry." In this
position, I must expect a high cut for its high percentage. A less
experienced duelist might venture a low cut, hoping to trade blows, and earn
a 5.5-4 victory. Doesn't Kurgan's point make perfect sense in light of my
opponent's fancy round parry?

REPORT FROM THE OUTBACK
by Jake Thrash
Since the orc took the month of January off to ponder orcish things, we
have to start this month's report leaping back to the month of January.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An eventful month, besides the DoM Archmage Tourney and the DoS Overlord
Tourney, the month of January also hosted the 4th ever Diamond Quest. There
were seven participants in the Tourney, old-time favorites Percival and
Shannon Colton, newcomers, MorganCrow and Lord Harvest, along with the
2nd-timers Saja Lyons and Aragorn, and the retiring Diamond Jake Thrash. The
Tourney was a round robin event, and every dueller fought every other
dueller.
The 7 participants were paired off randomly, and these 6 fought in the
first round with the following results..
1) AragornKoG def. ShanniCltn, 5 to 4 in 13
2) JakeThrash def. MorganCrow, 5 to 4 in 12
3) Lord Hrvst def. Percival, 5 to 4 in 15
The winners then moved up a ring, with Aragorn taking a break, allowing
Saja to step in against Percy. Since the first three matches were so closely
matched and took so long to complete (just 5 rounds shy of the maximum
allowed!), Ian R Mack stepped in to help call the remaining bouts, and here's
the result of round 2:
4) ShanniCltn def. JakeThrash, 5 to 2 in 6
5) Lord Hrvst def. MorganCrow, 5 to 4 in 12
6) Percival def. SajaIyones, 5 to 3 in 6
Again, winners moved up to the next ring, Aragorn came back in while
Shanni took a break, and in the third round, we saw:
7) JakeThrash def. Lord Hrvst, 5 to 3 in 12
8) Percival def. MorganCrow, 5 to 4 in 14
9) SajaIyones def. AragornKoG, 5 to 3 in 12
Things had to be shuffled around to make sure we were getting pairings that
hadn't happened already, and in the next round of fights we saw this:
10) Percival def. JakeThrash, 5 to 1 in 8
11) AragornKoG def. MorganCrow, 5 to 4 in 12
12) SajaIyones def. ShanniCltn, 5 to 3 in 11
By this time.. 3 fighters were standing out.. Aragorn, Percival, and
SajaIyones.. especially after this round of duels:
13) AragornKoG def. JakeThrash, 5 to 3 in 13
14) SajaIyones def. MorganCrow, 5 to 3 in 7
15) ShanniCltn def. Lord Hrvst, 5 to 4 in 11
Ian called the fight between Shanni and Hrvst rather quickly, and while
the other two duels were still going on he called this bout:
16) Percival dev. ShanniCltn, 5 to 1 in 8
This dropped Shanni from contention for her second title bid.
Then this fight saw Aragorn's chances for the Diamond fade away..
17) Percival def. AragornKoG, 5 to 2 in 11
Only one duelist had a chance to tie Percival's 5-1 record, and that was
SajaIyones. If she could defeat Lord Hrvst and JakeThrash, she and Percy
would have had to duke it out in a tie breaker. As it went, Lord Hrvst
dashed those hopes in a leap-frog match that he busted open in the 6th round
and took victory in the 8th.
18) Lord Hrvst def. SajaIyones, 5 to 2 in 8
Percival was then handed the covented Diamond rank-stone by his
predecessor, JakeThrash, who graciously handed it over from his position on
his back in ring 1, and then proceeded to bite Percy's foot. Sources are
still checking, but this may have been some obscure orc ritual we witnessed
there.
Here's the final tally..
Percival 5-1 *Diamond Quest Winner*
AragornKoG 3-2 (one duel not needed)
JakeThrash 2-3 (one duel not needed)
Lord Hrvst 3-2 (one duel not needed)
MorganCrow 0-6
SajaIyones 3-2 (one duel not needed)
ShanniCltn 3-3
Percy's triumph was well earned, his skill at the art of unarmed combat
puts him among the very best of the Outback's brawlers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Skipping forward to the weekend of March 2nd, Shannon Colton, the
Outback's most obsessed and dedicated dueller, (who was also the 2nd Diamond)
broke the 100 wins over losses barrier! Shanni is the first to do so in the
Outback, and is among a select few in ANY of the duels to have achieved such
a record. Her persistence, incomparable skill and unflagging enthusiasm are
to be applauded! On that note, Shanni has once again managed to earn Jake's
Brute of the Week award! (If she keeps winning that, I'm gonna have to
rename it...) Congrats Shanni!
To add in a testimonial, Shannon Colton exemplifies the very best Outback
has to offer. Not only does she regularly (if not obsessively) participate
in the duels, her talent for dragging in new duellers and for adding to the
overall atmosphere of the Outback, regularly makes the duels more enjoyable.
The Outback is lucky to have her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Over the last couple of months we have added several duellers to the ranks
of the Emeralds, and we'd like to welcome, Goldglo, AndersStof, and
LordRannos to our occasionally merry ranks. Jake thinks a careful eye needs
to be kept on these three and expects to see all of them do well during the
next Diamond Quest.
Additionally, there a number of non-emeralds that bear mentioning who we
expect to see moving up through the ranks very soon. DoF Demon (once known
as Super Imp), perhaps is the most notable of those. Wandering in as
clueless a fresh meat there ever was, he has wasted no time in challenging
anyone and everyone to duels. His fearlessness and tenacity have paid off
and he has already jumped to the rank of Ruby, and we don't expect it to be
too long before we see him advance again.
On a more somber note, it's my sad task to announce that Percy has
resigned from the ranks of the RDI's to pursue other things (some Holy Grail
or something no doubt...) and will no longer be calling duels in the Outback.
We will greatly miss him.
